Once you breathe the air of Anafi, you will feel the positive energy of the place.
It is an island loved by all for its natural beauty and atmosphere.
According to archaeological findings, the island was inhabited in prehistoric times. The Phoenicians had occupied the island and later came the Dorians, who founded the city of Anafi. In the 5th century BC, Anafi joined the Athenian Alliance. Like the other islands of the Cyclades, it was attacked by pirates on many occasions, the worst disaster being in 1537, when the island was destroyed by the pirate Barbarossa. Later, the island was subjugated by the Ottoman Empire. In 1821, the people of Anafi participated actively in the revolution.
In later years, during the reign of King Otho, since Anafi had the reputation of having the best builders in the country, many residents moved to Athens under his orders to build the royal palaces. They settled at the foot of the Acropolis and created their own neighborhood, "Anafiotika," which was a miniature of the island. The neighborhood is now a remarkable architectural gem of Athens.
Today, the island is slowly gaining popularity as a tourist destination, though still satisfying the traveler seeking the beauty of a virgin and unexplored area.
