The 100-kilometers long Arachthos River is the 8th biggest river in Greece and is known since the ancient times. Back then it was named after the king of Argos, Inachos, who according to mythology, collected the waters in a river bed and created this river after the storm of Defkalionas.
This river starts from mount Lakmos in Northern Pindos and after crossing the Ioannina prefecture it goes down in the plain of Arta, where together with Louros River they form a double delta in the Bay of Amvrakikos.
Metsovitikos, Kalaritikos, Zagoritikos Rivers as well as lots of torrents and streams connect with it and 55 bridges connect its banks. The so called Bridge of Arta is one of them, as well as the impressive bridge of Plaka, that is not only the biggest bridge in Balkans but is also a fine construction that adds to the beauty of the scenery.
Nowadays, it “takes care” of all the areas it goes through as it supplies them with drinkable water, it is used to water the whole plain of Arta and the momentum of its waters operates hydroelectric factories.
Arachthos also offers great entertainment choices: its banks that are surrounded by forests, springs with clear waters, astonishing hillsides and canyons are ideal for hiking trails as well as rafting in different levels of difficulty.
