On the intersection of Lysikratous, Vyronos and Selef Street (then it becomes Tripodon Street), in the same visible straight course with Hadrian's Arch, is located a circular monument resembling a small tower, the Monument of Lysicrates. The monument is one of the best surviving examples of choragic monument, i.e. a monument in which a bronze tripod was placed given as an honorary prize to the choragus, who took on the set-up and the conducting costs of the dancing events during the official ceremonies. It was built by the Lysicrates, in 335-336 BC, according to the engraved inscription on the epistyle. The monument is embellished with a frieze with scenes from the life of Dionysus, a monolithic leafed roof and the upper surface, which culminates into a basis in the form of an acanthus, where the choragic tripod was placed. The monument is also known as the "Lantern of Diogenes" (a cynic philosopher of the antiquity, who lived in jar and when people asked him why he was holding a lantern, he replied that he was looking for people). During the Ottoman Empire, the monument was about to be removed and transferred abroad, something which eventually did not happen, and it was incorporated in 1669 into the monastery, which was founded there by the Capuchins and was used by the monks as a reading room and a library, after they removed one of its posts to open the entrance. The monastery was destroyed during the Greek Revolution but the monument remains in its place, the landmark of Plaka.
