The Municipal Theater of Piraeus is a work of art of the 19th century and the landmark of the city. It was designed by the architect Ioannis Lazarimos. The construction works started in 1883, while its inauguration took place twelve years later, in 1895. While at first it conveys a calm aesthetic, on its exterior its entrance, which is marked with a propylon standing on four Corinthian columns with a pediment, counterbalances this calmness, adding a hint of majesty to the building. Above the building, there is a rectangular elevation, which also ends in a pediment. In the interior, the audience's hall is of petal shape with an orchestra, galleries and balconies. The theatre's capacity is approximately 1,300 people. The chandelier that illuminated the room and the scene, which is considered one of the few examples of the era in Europe, are preserved till today. The earthquakes in 1981 and 1999 made it dangerous and tottery and therefore studies for its restoration have started. Moreover, it was declared a preserved monument in 1985, but the restoration projects started 23 years later. Nowadays, the reconstruction works are in the final stage and it is said that the Municipal Theater will reopen its doors providing a cultural rejuvenation in Piraeus.
