The National Archeological Museum due to its remarkable exhibits can carry away even those who do not like visiting museums. Several works of art that apart from their archeological significance have a rich visual interest, as they represent several styles, periods and regions of Greece. Among the 11.000 exhibits, the child with the horse, the statue of Poseidon, the golden mask of Agamemnon, findings from the prehistoric settlement of Thira and many more stand out. Many exhibits are so masterly that will carry you back to their era alluring your mind away from the museum. The thematic sections presented in its tens of halls are:
The Prehistoric Antiquities Collection, which includes works of art of great civilizations that developed in the Aegean Sea from the 6th millennium till 1050 BC (Neolithic, Cycladic, Mycenaean) as well as findings from the prehistoric settlement of Thira.
The Sculpture Collection presents the evolution of ancient Greek Sculpture from the 7th century BC till the 5th century AD via unique masterpieces. The Vases and Minor Arts Collection includes representative works of ancient Greek pottery from the 11th century BC till the Roman era as well as the Stathatos Collection, a diachronic minor arts collection.
The Metalwork Collection includes many unique original works, statues, figurines and minor arts works.
The Egyptian and Eastern Antiquities Collection include works of art dated from the Predynastic period (5000 BC) till the emergence of ancient Rome. The museum often hosts some very interesting periodic exhibitions.
