The Hellenic Maritime Museum is the captain of the maritime museums. It hosts exhibits referring to the Greek attainments in the sea and the trade throughout the centuries presenting the development of the Greek navy from prehistoric times till nowadays. Moreover, the visitor can admire sea pieces of artists of the 19th-20th century in the Maritime Gallery. Also, in the interior of the museum, there is an organized library as well as a map collection of the Greece and world maps from the 16th till the 19th century. In the courtyard of the museum lies the legendary submarine of the Greek Navy, "Papanikolis".
