The cave is located an altitude of 260 on the hill Krevati , about 3 kilometers from the municipality of Vari. Around 550 BC, it gave refuge to the sculptor Archedemos who came from the island of Thera and settled there. His signed stalactite reliefs are still visible on its walls . Archedemos “nympholyptos” became possessed by the Nymphs and transformed the cave into a temple, a place to worship the Nymphs and Pan. That’s how the cave got its name. Abandoned in the middle of the 3rd century BC, it began to be used again by the Neoplatonists until the late 4th century AD, when it ended conclusively as a worship space. The cave is mentioned by the traveler R. Chandler in 1765, and was later visited by many others such as Lord Byron and King Otto. The site was excavated in 1902 by the American School of Classical Studies.
