It’s the 2nd biggest river in Thrace and one of the 5 biggest in Greece. It is the natural border between Macedonia and Thrace. It springs from Bulgaria and specifically the Rila area, and has a total length of 234km, from which the 130 are on Greek soil. None of Nestos’ smaller rivers and streams has names. There are two hydroelectric dams along the Greek side, called Thisavros and Platanovrisi.
The famous Delta of Nestos occupies a large area in the southern sections of the prefectures of Kavala and Xanthi. The point where the river meets the sea is a place of intense interest for naturalists, and therefore attracts lots of visitors. The Delta of Nestos has been acclaimed a Wetland of International Significance, and is protected by the Ramsar Convention. Although there has been human interference, the location does not stop to move with its beauty. There is rich flora and fauna at the Delta’s various habitats, and the variety and rarity of the species cannot be found anywhere else.
The natural beauty of the Stena Nestos (Nestos Passage) is amazing. The mountains’ strange formations, the winding river, the rich vegetation and the singing of the 254 different bird species which are found there, enchant visitors. All five senses are aroused, something which makes you feel alive. Vision admires the wonder of nature, smell enjoys the odour of the rich greenery, hearing relishes the quietness and touch is utilized through the different activities someone can engage in this majestic scenery, such as canoe-kayak, archery, mountain biking, trekking, bird watching etc.
For all the above reasons Nestos is considered a miracle of nature, but also a source of life and work for the people of the surrounding areas as well as others.
