It is characterized as the stone giant of the Elian plain. Its construction began in 1221 AC and, since then, it stands proudly on the hill over the Kyllinian gulf. The castle was built within two years by the Frank knight, Geoffrey of Villehardouin, one of the two rulers of the principality of Peloponnese, as an observatory post to the Ionian Sea and the Elian plain.
During its long course, it was ruled by many conquerors. One of them, Constantine Paleologos, ordered the evacuation of the castle so as not to fall into the hands of the enemy. In 1821, Ibrahim blew up a large part of it, but the castle remained in place and, nowadays, it is the landmark of the area.
Like a ship travelling through time, Chlemoutsi transfers echoes of other times, when it was bustling with life, and fills the visitor's imagination with vivid images. Restored and hospitable, it is the ideal place for gazing over the fertile Elian plain and the endless Ionian Sea.
