Panagia Gkremniotissa is located in the upper part of Chora with a palm tree in its parvis and a wonderful view. The legend says that it was built during the Ottoman Empire when an icon of Panagia was found on the rocks in the beach of Mylopotas. It was drifted there when the inhabitants of Crete threw the icon in the sea in order not to fall into the hands of the Turks. Therefore, the inhabitants decided to build a church dedicated to Panagia near the metropolis of Ios. However, their efforts were not crowned with success, since the church was found dejected every morning and the icon appeared in the place where the church is built nowadays, on a cliff overlooking the island from where it began its journey, Crete. So, the church of Panagia Gkremniotissa was built in this place to host the icon and to become a place of worship for the believers.
