The stone houses and the large church show us that lots of people used to live in Anogi in the past. However, nowadays only 35 residents remain there and “fight” against the desolation of the village. Built at an altitude of 550 meters on the mount Niritos, it is at a higher point than any other village in Ithaki. The nice owner of the village’s café, where you will sit to relax, will narrate you stories from the past, will share his opinions about life and will give you the key of the church of Virgin Mary, where you will have the chance to admire some impressive wall paintings. On the central road you will see a playground built in the ruins of an old, stone house. Outside the village the huge monoliths (some can only be seen after you follow a hiking trail) will surely attract your attention. Lots of visitors come to the village on the 14th of August, when they have the chance to dance from traditional dances to waltz.
