The Byzantine church of Agios Georgios (Saint George) is one of the most famous churches in Omorfokklisia. It is a domed cross-in-square church, built in the 12th century. The frescoes in the interior date back to the 13th and the 15th century. Although during the Ottoman rule they were severely damaged and an interior fire destroyed a significant part of them, the church is in very good condition. However, what makes this temple so unique in Greece is a 3 m wooden statue, representing the Saint wearing the traditional Greek skirt “foustanella”. A visit to this quiet harmonic church is really worth it. No wonder why the settlement of Omorfoklissia, which means “beautiful church” in Greek, was named like that; the beauty of the church is undisputable. The reputation of a miraculous woodcut attracts many pilgrims who come to Omorfoklisia each year on the feast of St. George to pray, trying to stick coins on the woodcut.
