The mansions of Kastoria are a real jewel for city and indicate its economic boom in the 17th and 18th century. During the Ottoman rulership, the mansions belonged not only to Greeks, but also to Turks and Jews. Today, only the mansions of the Greeks have survived in Doltso and Apozari districts of Kastoria. A walk at the cobbled streets will automatically take you centuries back, as you gaze at the magnificent traditional mansions and the neoclassical buildings with the colorful backyards. Most of the mansions belonged to wealthy locals and were built thanks to the remittances sent by the migrated merchants. The fur traders were very successful abroad. Notice that the mansions still have the name of their first owners.
During this romantic stroll at the streets of the old town, the Folklore Museum, the Costume Museum and the Delinanio Folklore Museum that are housed in some of these mansions are definitely worth the visit.
