On the hill, west of Nea Peramos, you will find the remains of a castle with byzantine architecture which is believed by many to be the byzantine city of Anaktoroupoli that appeared between the 10th and 15th century. Modern data show that the castle was built during 1167-1170 in order to control a port between Thessaloniki and Istanbul. Following the conquer of the castle by the Ottomans Turks, some changes have been made, while the settlement was relocated between the 16th and the 17th century to the village of Eleftheres, where the castle is located today, in order to avoid the threat of pirate attacks.
