The church of Panagia Eikosifoinissa is one of the most well-known monasteries of Macedonia. It dominates the Pangaio Mountain, at an altitude of 743 meters and is surrounded by a wonderful nature that matches perfectly the sanctity of the place. By the time it was established, the church became a landmark of this region as it played an important role in preparing the revolt against the Turks by raising the national sentiment and courage of people. Even if it was overly damaged throughout the centuries, it never stopped being a cradle of faith and national awareness. It also played a key role in reinforcing the education of people. The monastery was offering several lessons and had plenty of books and manuscripts.
The church is known for the miracles that are said to have happened there. The icon of Panagia Acheiropoiitos, painted by Apostle Loukas, attracts a great number of Orthodox Christians who come in person to watch its miracle. Tradition says that a Bulgarian soldier once tried to damage the icon of Virgin Mary but he was immediately repelled and died. It is said that the trace of his shoe and his gun are still visible on the marble floor.

The church is accessible by car from Kavala to Nikisiani (through Elefteroupoli) or by bus to Nikisiani. Some people choose to walk up to the monastery.
