The important site of the Holy Baptistery is located in Lydia, near the archaeological site of Philippi. Lydia was the first woman in Europe to be baptized, in the river outside the church. It is a vivid river with a long history that symbolizes the consolidation of Christianity. This simple church is situated at a natural landscape that captivates its visitors. A green nature surrounds the unique building. The church is consisted of three arches, so when visitors enter the Baptistery they see a series of columns in the middle of which lies a marble baptismal font that substituted the role of the river. However, getting baptized on the banks of the river is very common, especially among adults. The marble is dominant, whereas the white color of the church in combination with its architectural decor reminds us of the Ancient Greek tradition and the neoclassical style. The church is full of colorful, bright paintings on its glass windows. A quite small traditional place preferred by many couples who want to get married or baptize their children.
The Church of Philippi has established in this particular place the Historical Research Center “Apostle Pavlos” which includes expositions, book and a conference hall. It aims at educating people on the life and work of Apostle Pavlos in the region of Kavala, at promoting tourism as well as at conducting research and developing a scientific approach on this particular matter.
A visit in the Baptistery of Agia Lydia is necessary for people who want to develop a deeper connection not only with the religion, but also and most importantly with the civilization, the culture and the history of this region. The nature around the church, the sweet sound of the river, the simplicity and the unique image of the Baptistery attract thousands of visitors who feel the need to get to know the site of Ancient Philippi even better.
