It is the work of Ibrahim Pasha and it was built during the decade 1520-1530. It was a sort of an aqueduct that supplied the city of Kavala with water, providing also the means for growth for the local society. The water was carried via a 6,5 km pipeline from the Old Town of Kavala to Kamares which used to serve as a bridge that helped water reach the local taps. Although it was an innovative work, there were many difficulties in supplying the city with water after 1912. However, the problem was fixed gradually after many efforts.
Kamares are 270 m long and 25 m tall, they are thus one of the most impressing monuments of Kavala. Their arcade structure is a unique decoration for Kavala and no-one can remain indifferent in front of this exquisite sight.
