The Archaeological Museum of Kavala was established in 1943 and it is an important museum for the entire East Macedonia Region. It hosts exhibits of Kavala dating back to the prehistoric times, as well as masterpieces found during the excavations in Neapoli, the ancient city of Kavala, in Amphipoli and in other places located at the East Macedonia and Thrace Region. Visitors can admire exhibitions situated on the ground floor and on the first floor. There are two rooms on the ground floor.
In the first room, you will see among others Ionic columns, pots, statuettes and votive steles that came to light following the excavations in Neapoli. In the second room, there are finds from the excavation in Amphipoli which date back to the Classical and the Hellenistic periods until the Roman period. As they continue to the covered corridor, visitors can admire exhibits from the prehistoric settlements of this region, while on the first floor they will admire various finds from the ancient towns of Kavala as well as from memorial monuments. Some of the most important exhibits are the Cycladic amphora, a red-figured hydria and an impressive sarcophagus.
Since 2006, the Museum houses a new exhibition on the development of the city of Kavala from the ancient until the modern times. The museum is located at the seafront of Kavala and the access is extremely simple for tourists.
