Tsipouro festival: Not in just one, but in two villages of the prefecture takes place the Tsipouro festival. In the village of Georgitsi in late October and in the village of Allonia in November. It is a traditional festival with lots of tsipouro, singing, dancing and traditional dishes.
Festival of Boukouvala: The festival of Boukouvala takes place in the village of Kastorio in November and signals the starting of the gathering of olives. Of course you will now wonder what Boukouvala is. They are slices of bread accompanied with oil and roasted. You accompany them with wine, other dishes and of course dancing. Hiking is also organized in the gorges of Taygetos.
Wine festival: Another festival that takes place in two villages of the prefecture, in the village of Sikia during the last weekend of July and in the village of Grammousa in November. You will drink lots of wine, taste many traditional dishes and of course dance and sing.
Chestnut Festival: A three-day chestnut festival takes place in the village of Arna during the last days of October. An outdoor market is set up next to the biggest frying pan in Greece, where chestnuts are fried and served together with warm tsipouro and traditional music. At the same time lots of different events are organized.
Smelt Festival: Towards the end of September, a big festival is organized in Elafonisos in the honor of smelt! Smelt, wine and other dishes are offered while the locals dance with traditional music.
Sailing Races: Usually towards the end of March, sailing races for kids and teenagers are organized in Githio with the support of the Sailing Club of Lakonia. Lots of young people take part every year and the organization is becoming more and more successful.
Spartathlon: In late September, a 25-kilometer long marathon is organized in Sparta in the honor of Fidipidis and lots of athletes from all over the world participate. The route of the marathon is the same with the one that Fidipidis followed in 490 B.C in order to get from Athens to Sparta and ask for help.
During the summer months different cultural events and festivals take place in different cities such as Sparta, Monemvasia, Githio, Neapolis and Mustra. Moreover, lots of feasts in the honor of different saints are organized all year round and especially from the 14th till the 16th of August.
