In the Sulphur Mines you will literally find yourself inside a piece of contemporary history of the island. You should combine your visit here, with a visit to the Mining Museum in Adamadas so as to get a complete picture of the important role mining played in the wealth of Milos from prehistoric times until today. At the sulphur mines one can still see many facilities of a typical mine since its peak production was in the 1930’s. You will see all the rusty transportation facilities, sulfur mines, the deserted offices, tools and various objects of unknown use.
The sulfur and rust have given the whole area earthy vibrant colors in hues of red, yellow and brown. The sulphur mine in Paliorema ceased operation in the late 1960’s.
