Surprisingly, at the regional road of Parikia-Aliki, in contrast with what prevails in the scenery of the island, a green oasis appears. It has been named “Valley of the Butterflies”, since below the dense foliage of the trees, and on the ivy that covers their trunks, millions of butterflies have nested. The cool atmosphere, the running waters, and vegetation that is overflowing in this small area, create the perfect climate for the butterflies that make their appearance in the park during the summer months. To be exact, this species belongs to fledglings or moths, which remain still during the day, when their brown-black wings with the yellow-white stripes are barely distinguishable on the leaves, but which will fly into the air at the slightest sound, revealing their red lower wings. In order to fly, they will consume the energy they have stored for their reproduction, so no matter how beautiful the sight of their red wings may seem, let’s not disturb the silence they need so much. The access to the valley is easy and the signs will show you the turn that you should not miss, as long as you take the regional road of Parikia-Aliki. The carved arrows will guide your walk to the stone roads between the trees, while colored, winged touches appear from various corners. The refreshment bar at the end is perfect for a quick break, since no one is satisfied by taking this walk just once.
