According to the myth, it was at this river where Ermis used to deliver to Charon the souls of the dead, so that he carries them to the kingdom of Hades, the Underworld. It is interesting that such an idyllic river was connected to the dreary underworld. Acheron drains from the mountains of Ioannina, flowing through Thesprotia and Preveza prefectures where it is enriched by the waters of Souli Mountains and ends up at the Ionian sea. Its clear water refreshes the exquisite landscape of the gorge from which Acherontas springs. You can enjoy the waters of the river either by crossing it on foot, riding a horse or going rafting. The magnitude of the landscape is imposing; green slopes end up to white pebbles and a bit further the grey barren rocks in narrow places hide the sun even at noon. One visit to Acheron is enough to make you want to come back. The entrance to its sources lies 2km away from the main road of Glyki (there is a sign). You can only cross the river during the summer months.
