It is worth visiting this archaeological site, since apart from the unique point where it is located, Ancient Thira is one of the few samples of ancient cities that are preserved to such an extent. Ancient Thira is the settlement that for many years constituted the only urban settlement of Santorini. The ancient city extends to an oblong area, at the top of the limestone Mesa Vouno (meaning ‘inside mountain’), at the southeastern part of the island. It was inhabited for more than 1000 years, with the last findings corresponding to the Hellenistic and Roman periods. During the byzantine years the settlement also served as a refuge from pirate raids. Nowadays, after a relatively difficult ascent, you will reach the top of the cliff, from where there is a view of the endless sea. During your walk on the stone-paved path you will come across public buildings: the Agora, the Royal arcade, the Temple of Artemis, the Temple of Karneios Apollo, and also the magnificent theatre with the view to the Aegean Sea gather most interest. Visiting hours: Daily 8:30-15:00 except Monday.
