About half an hour away from the center of Xanthi is the seaside town of Avdira, its name true to its rich history. It is the birthplace of the important ancient philosopher Democritus and the sophist Protagoras. According to mythology, Avdira was named after Hercules’ companion, Avdiros. It is said that Hercules founded the city in honor of Avdiros who lost his life during Hercules’ 8th Labor, eaten by Diomidis’ horses. Today, Avdira combines its history with its advantageous position and picturesque beauty, and the result satisfies every visitor who chooses to visit it. It is particularly busy during the summer months. A walk along the seaside area, and particularly in the port of Avdira, is a must. You also should not omit a tour around the Archaeological Museum. For nature lovers, the area is ideal for cycling and swimming at the lush beaches. At the port of Avdira you can also see the locals enjoying their favorite pastime, fishing. If you visit during the winter season, wander around the cobblestone streets of this traditional town, or if you are more interested in religious tourism, visit the church of Agios Athanasios and the historic church of Agia Paraskevi.
