If you visit Avdira, don’t omit a visit to the archaeological site of Avdira. In an area of 3.000 acres the history of Avdira unfolds: the Archaic, the Classical, the Hellenistic and the Roman period. The archaeologist Dimitris Lazaridis started the excavations around 1950, and these have brought to light findings which reveal the city’s architecture thus transferring the visitor to the distant past. The more important are the ‘The house with the dolphins’, the area of the West Gate and the 4th century BC wall, the sanctuary and the houses as well as the ancient theatre. The mere fact that in all these places lived Democritus, who formulated the atomic theory, is enough for somebody to want to visit Avdira.
