Timios Prodromos is the protector saint of Xanthi. The church is located in the Palia Poli and it is a three aisled basilica. The central aisle is dedicated to the Birth of Timios Prodromos, the north to the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the south to the neo-martyr Agios Georgios of Ioannina. According to the two engraved subscriptions placed on the outside, the church was built in 1839, through the efforts of the Metropolitan Bishop Eugenios. The last renovation was completed between the years 1995 and 1996. The church celebrates twice a year, on the 24th June, the date of birth of Timios Prodromos, and on the 29th August, the date of decapitation of John the Baptist.
