The foundations of the Holy Monastery of Panagia Archaggeliotissa were put before the earthquakes of 1829. After the earthquakes and the collapse of big part of it, it was rebuilt in 1840 by the Metropolitan Bishop of Xanthi of the time, Efgenios. It is located at an altitude of 160m and has an exquisite view. Its katholikon is dedicated to the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. According to one version, the name of the monastery was taken from a small icon which portrays the Virgin Mary, with the Archangels Michael and Gabriel and bears the inscription, “Archaggeliotissa”.
