It is well known that the cultivation of tobacco made Xanthi famous and rich. Many buildings which in the past were centre of commerce now ornate the city. They were built in the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century and they are exquisite examples of architecture. Some of which are unique in Europe. When they were built the tobacco warehouses were located in the valley, on the southeast of the Palia Poli. However, today that area is near to the edge of the centre, close to Eleftheria’s square and is defined by the streets Democritus, Michael Karaoli, Elpidos, Brokumi, Georgiou Kondili, Navarinou, Ellis and Lefkipou. A visit to the area will enrich your knowledge about the architecture of these buildings which served their purposes. For example, all of them had a semi-basement and an attic which were important for the process of tobacco.
