The Haintou forest is habitat of thousands of rare species of flora and fauna, and has been declared as a preserved monument of nature. It is located in the mountain range of Rodopi on the borders with Bulgaria and covers an area of 180 acres. The earth formation of Xanthi has caused the forest to grow extensively with its flora and fauna. You can reach it either through the Livaditi of Stavroupoli or through the forest village Erimanthos. The network is really helpful as there are many designated stops along many trekking routes. The forest mainly has coniferous and deciduous broad-leafed trees, some of which have reached an age beyond 200 years. The pine trees, fir trees, beech trees and the characteristic yellow lily of Rodopi constitute the flora of the area. You can also see plants such as Anthemis of Strimpri or Geo of Rodopi etc. The fauna of the area is constituted by big mammals like bears, wolves, jackals etc as well as 102 species of birds.
