Other names of the River Kosinthos are Kompsatos or Kossinitis. It is one of the most important rivers of the Greek Thrace. It goes through the prefecture of Xanthi and a part of the prefecture of Rodopi. It springs from the central Rodopi, specifically the area Diasparto, continues through the picturesque Pomak villages and flows in Vistonida Lake. Its total length is 68km. Oak and pine forests spread all over the area and beech trees meet them along the Greek-Bulgarian borders. The area is the habitat of wild animals mainly, mammals as well as birds, some of which are in danger of extinction. It is worth mentioning that in the area of Kossinthos they have observed the Eastern Imperial Eagle, a bird species which is worldwide threatened with extinction. This rich flora and fauna, to an extent owes its existence to Vistonida Lake which is near by. Whoever wants to do some trekking along the river will enjoy, aside from everything else, the sounds of the fast flowing waters and the bridges which can be seen everywhere. It is also worthwhile paying a visit to the watermill Halil, which is one of the few surviving watermills in the area.
