The largest church on the island, Panagia stands imposingly on top of the hill above the main town. From there you can enjoy the sunset and the magnificent view of the island. It is built on the site of an ancient sanctuary, (there are also sculptures, inscriptions, statue bases) materials of which have been used to build the church. The church is known for its tall bell tower, the architecture (domed basilica), the marble iconostasis and also for the legendary icon of the Virgin Mary and its miraculous properties.
Panagia is a single-aisled, multiple-domed church basilica with a tall steeple.
