Although it does not boast a long history, is one of the most important villages of the district, and is constantly developing. Situated in the center of the prefecture, at an altitude of 400 meters, its main attractions are the Byzantine churches and the nearby archaeological finds. The well known flea-market/bazaar that takes place in the village every Saturday and the big agricultural exhibition that’s held there once a year make the village a great center of attraction. The name of the village is thought to come from the Cretan word "Arkalon” - badger, of which many live in the area. Another version of the story suggests the village is named for Arkoleon, the name of one of the twelve nobles of Byzantium who ruled the island.
