The most famous of its exhibits is the Phaistos Disc, one of the most enigmatic objects of the Minoan era. Its contents and the purpose of its construction remain a mystery. Here also, the great murals of what the archaeologists called ‘La Parisienne’ and ‘The Bull Leaping’ are on view, murals that were moved from the palace of Knossos for their preservation. The life in Crete from 6000 BC onwards is presented to the visitor’s eyes through the most famous discoveries of central and eastern Crete, which were gathered with great care and effort. The museum, the building of which began in the period 1933-1937, is among the most important museums in Europe. Its display cases house a wealth of objects from the Minoan period, and thus is it considered the foremost museum of Minoan civilization. However, due to renovation works in 2006, only a specially designed room next to the museum is in operation. Among the major exhibits you will see, in addition to the above, are the Snake Goddesses , the golden bee amulet, the “Ring of Minos,” and more. Visiting hours: Winter (1/12-31/30): Monday: 11:00-17:00, Tuesday-Sunday: 8:00-15:00. Summer (1/4-30/11): Monday-Sunday and holidays: 9:00-16:00 Tuesday-Saturday: 8:00-20:00.
