The Museum was founded in 1973. After much deliberation and effort, the museum presents the Cretan tradition and culture through seven divisions. The first division is devoted to diet, showing traditional products and the methods the Cretans used to create them. The second division deals with architecture, with an emphasis on various forms of housing. The third division is dedicated to weaving, presenting the acquisition of raw materials, and the tools of the trade. The fourth section is called "Crafts-production-trades," and presents arts such as basketry, pottery and various rituals and games. The fifth section is devoted to transport, presenting transport options for both people and goods. The sixth section relates to the manners and customs of the Cretan tradition, where there are references to the Klidonas (a sort of marriage lottery), carnivals, etc. The final section is the social organization exhibit, concerning religion, music, and fine arts; as well as the weapons and accessories of war.
