It is the southernmost mountain range of Greece that stretches in between the plain of Messara to the plain of Tsoutsouras. The landscape and nature is untamed, and difficult to reach due to the steepness of the roads. The altitude is relatively low, but the range spreads over a wide distance, covering most of the southern part of the prefecture of Heraklion. Due to the drought and high temperatures that exist in the area, the vegetation is sparse.
