The Prophet Elias Monastery is a men’s monastery whose story begins in 1813. During the revolution of 1821, Theodoros Kolokotronis and other rebel chieftains took refuge in the monastery. Today you can admire its antique icons, its wooden icon screen, and its library. Within walking distance is the Convent of Agia Evpraxia, dating from 1865....
Dating from the 17th century, it currently functions as a nunnery. In the inner courtyard, one can visit the Byzantine-style, domed Church of St. Nicholas.

The Cathedral of the island, known as 'Monastiri' (the Abbey), was built during the late 17th century. The church is in the basilica style, with a dome flanked by two bell towers. Inside, the focus of attention is the marble icon screen. The old cells of the monastery are now home to the Byzantine Ecclesiastical Museum.
