These impressive lakes are known to those that have heard about Zagoria as they are considered to be a main sight of the area even though it takes a bit of hiking to reach them. Dragon Lakes are the alpine lakes located on the mountains of Epirus and were created 10000 years ago due to the melting of the glaciers. On mount Timfi and at an altitude of 1500-2050 meters there are 11 small lakes with a diameter of 100-200 meters. The biggest of them is the Dragon Lake of Timfi or Gamila at an altitude of 2050 meters northwest of the Gamila peak, which is the highest of Timfi. It is full of water all year round and although it was considered bottomless its depth is now 5 meters. A special characteristic are the Triturus alpestris, a rare species of amphibian that looks like a small dragon. It is visited by lots of climbers and the only way to get there is through a hiking trail from the village of Mikro Papigo. The duration of the trip is about 5 hours.
