Tzoumerka together with the mountains Kakarditsa and Lakmos are the most important mountains of the region. Its peak, Katafidi, reaches at an altitude of 2393 meters. The steep slopes are its main characteristic that cover the biggest part of the western side. Its eastern side is mild and easier for hiking in winter.
Like in the rest of Pindos, in Tzoumerka there are some of the biggest and most rare mammals of Greece. If you are lucky you might see bears, wolves, elks and other smaller species. The mountain is full of oak and pinon trees while at some points there are cercis siliquastrum, wild cherry trees and plane trees. There are lots of villages where you can find accommodation although some of them are hard to reach.
The roads in the mountain look like they have not been built bearing in mind the weather conditions of the area. Most of them get destroyed from severe weather conditions while landslides are quite often. You have to be extra careful on the road towards the village of Theodoriana.
There are places where the scenery looks like a quarry. The roads, however, keep on increasing all the time. The dirt road connecting the village Theodoriana with the shelter in Tzoumerka and the western villages really caught our attention. Such a road changes the look of the mountain, harming the beauty of the scenery.
The archaeological findings in Pramanta show us that the area was inhibited at least since the Copper Age. According to a myth the king of Orchomenos, Athamas, who was driven crazy by the Goddess Ira and killed one of his sons, came to this mountain to find peace.
During the period of the kingdom of Epirus, the area developed immensely and continued having some special advantages in the Turkish Occupation until the arrival of Ali Pasa.
One of the most important monuments is the Red Church, also known as Virgin Mary Vellas, which is located in the settlement of Paleochori in Vourgareli. Dating back to the late 12th century, it is said that it was named after the red and black bricks in its outer walls. You can also visit the Folklore Museum of Karalis in Theodoriana that houses a collection of 1800 objects of folklore art and tradition. River Arachthos, which crosses the whole area, is ideal for rafting and kayak.
