Only 8 km away from Kastoria, at the location “nisi” (island in Greek) in Dispilio lies one of the most ancient lacustrine settlement in Europe that dates back to 5500 BC.
In the early 20th century, once the lake level dropped due to a drought, some random piles and a variety of objects and archaeological evidence came to light, testifying the presence of life 7,000 years ago. The findings prove that people lived as organized society; they raised animals, went fishing and hunting, they made their own tools and everyday items.
Today, after decades of conducting researches and excavations, you can find a replica of the lacustrine settlement, a floating city made of clay, soil and reeds. Inside the huts that were created, you will see a variety of objects used at that time, such as pottery, jewelry, ceramics, fruit bowls and pots, tools of flint or bones, baskets and a small fireplace. The Dispilio Tablet, a wooden tablet found in the shallow part of the lake, is an early attempt of written expression and thus an important finding.
A tour at the Neolithic settlement of Dispilio will give you a complete picture of the lives and the habits of the people of that period.
