The Ethnological Museum of the Greek-Cappadocian civilization was established in 1995 by the Cultural Center of Nea Karvali where the museum is housed. Nea Karvali is a typical example of a refugee village and it is situated 8 km away from Kavala. The Centre for Cappadocian Studies, which is located behind the church of Agios Grigorios, was founded along with the museum and it is the depository of the Cappadocian tradition. It is the guardian of many historically significant documents and it conducts research regarding the life of the Cappadocian refugees. The remarkable exhibits reveal the tradition and history of the Cappadocian Greeks. Visitors will admire traditional costumes, wonderful embroidered rugs, the traditional Cappadocian lyre, objects that men used while working, pots for use, religious finds, documents written in the language of Karamanlides, an Orthodox Christian tribe that lived in Anatolia as well as books printed by printers of that period. The museum offers the unique opportunity to get in touch with the Greek element and the Greek civilization of Asia Minor.
In 1997 it was declared as “Museum of the Year” by the European Union. The museum is accessible by bus from Kavala. The destination is Xanthi or Crysoupoli but it makes a stop at Nea Karvali, opposite to the church that is in front of the museum.
