Pangaio Mountain, also known as the “mountain of gold”, is one of the most beautiful mountains of Greece, in the northwest side of Kavala Prefecture. It is 40 km long and 20 km wide. The highest summits are Pilaf Tepe (1,870 meters) and Koshnitsa or Mati (“the eye”, 1,956 meters). According to the myth, the mountain was named after Pangaios, son of the Thracian god of war Ares and Kritovouli. It is a magical mountain with rich forests of beeches, firs, planes, chestnuts and oaks. Water runs in abundance in its water resources. The gorgeous colorful slopes create a beautiful landscape that has a long history. Such an example is the theaters of Dionysus where his followers used to search the “ecstasis” (exaltation of the soul) as well as various ways to connect with him. The most ancient views on the immortality of the soul were perceived in this place. Over the years, the cult of the Ancient Greek god Dionysus was replaced by Christianity. The church of Panagia Eikosifoinissa lies in the east side of the mountain, at an elevation of approximately 600 meters. The ecstasis and the mystery of the imposing nature are combined with the sanctity that you will feel if you visit the monastery.
Countless visitors come to Pangaio Mountain to admire its beauty, to feel the serenity of the landscape and of course to practice various activities. There is a ski resort for winter sports fans on the highest peak of the mountain, while a bit lower lies the Forestal Village of Pangaio, where you can rent a room and taste delicious dishes in the local restaurants. There are also many mountain huts at its peaks, where you can find accommodation and discover the area. Last but not least, the lovers of climbing can have a lifetime experience at Pangaio. In the northeast side of Trikorfo are many vertical rocks and towers formations of 150-250 meters high, a favorite spot for climbers! Although the mountain is not widely known, visitors of Kavala should not miss its beauty and its mystery.
