Has taken Rigas Feraios’ (Velestinlis) legacy and utilised it to its full potential. Rigas Feraios, also known as Velestinlis, a name taken from his place of birth, was born in 1757 in a rich family. He was one of the first supporters of the Enlightenment, with rich literary work and important political activism. With his ideas he contributed greatly to the awakening of the enslaved nation and to the preparation of the Revolution. He was arrested for his revolutionary activity in Austria-Hungary and was executed by the Turks in Belgrade (the place he was imprisoned is now a museum bearing his name). Rigas Velestinlis’ statue adorns a hill of his hometown full of pine trees. In this area there is also the archaeological site of Feres, where visitors can see the ancient source of Yperia Krini and also go to the town hall where one of the five surviving, original Riga’s maps (Charta) is kept. The Charta depicts in big dimensions, Greece and important historical events of his time. It is also worthwhile spending some time in the Museum of Agricultural Tools and Traditional Technology, where more than 2.000 items are on display.
