It is considered one of the most important and most ancient settlements in Greece. It is situated on the hill Kastraki, not far from the village with the same name, at a distance of 15 km west of Volos. The first findings came to light in the beginning of the 19th century and the excavations were completed in the end of the 70’s. The Neolithic settlement of Sesklo – one of the most ancient excavated settlements in Europe – was inhabited for the first time in the middle of the 7th millennium BC, by families who cultivated the land and kept herds. The findings from that period are poor architectural remains, tools made of stone, bone, obsidian and flint as well as few clay figurines. Since the 6th millennium BC there are findings which reveal a developed civilization. The houses’ foundations and their characteristics can be seen today in the archaeological sight. Towards the end of the 5th millennium, Sesklo was destroyed. It was re-inhabited during the Late Neolithic period, in the 4th millennium BC, within a small area and only on the hill. Visiting hours: Daily 8:30-15:00 except Monday during summer & 8:30-15:00 during winter.
