The area was first inhabited during the end of the Neolithic period until the Mycenaean. The ancient Dimitrias, at a distance of 1.5 km south of Volos, was founded in the 3rd century BC, as an example of strategic position and good economical and political development, by the Macedonian King Dimitrius the Besieger, from whom it was named after. During the reign of Dimitrius the Besieger’s son, Antigonos Gonatas (277-239 BC), the city was built according to the Ippodameion system. The excavations revealed parts of the palace, agora, an ancient theatre – built in the first half of the 3rd century BC, some houses and parts of cemeteries. In the centre of agora was found the temple of Artemis of Iolkos. Visiting hours: Monday-Friday 8:0-14:30, Saturday & Sunday with telephone appointment.
