The castle of Volos on the hill of ‘Palia’ was the medieval core of the city. On this small hill the uninterrupted settlement started since the Neolithic period. Fortified from Justinian, the small settlement was named Volos for the first time in the 14th century. After the conquest of Thessaly from the Ottomans in 1423, the Turkish army and people inhabited the Castle whereas the Christians went to the villages of Pelion. The area of the Castle has the oldest preserved monuments of the city today; parts of a byzantine wall, ruins of a palaiochristianic basilica, bath and ammunition storage of the Ottoman years.
