The Patmiada School (Patmiada Ecclesiastical School) is one of the first religious schools in Greece. It was founded in 1713 by the cleric Makarios Kalogeras and was housed initially in the Cave of the Revelation. Makarios, who had a close relationship with influential Phanariotes (Constantinople Greeks) and the Ecumenical Patriarchate, was the first headmaster of the School till his death in 1737. The School encountered lots of difficulties not only during the Turkish Occupation, but also around the turn of the century, and was for a time moved to Samos.
Nowadays, although the financial problems are immense, the School continues its operation near the place of the Revelation (Ecclesiastical Gymnasium and Lyceum). For enrollment, references from the religious leader of the student’s district are necessary. The School is housed in the same building with a boarding house, which was donated by the Ministry of Education.
