Cherry Festival: In the village of Agra, near Edessa, the two-day cherry festival takes place during the first fifteen days of June. The famous cherries of Pella are honored and you have the chance to taste or purchase them in any form you can imagine. Cakes, ice-cream, drinks, marmalade and many more made by the local female clubs in a traditional way. Of course, it would not be a proper festival without music, so a traditional Macedonian feast takes place in the village’s square.
“Akritia”: Aridea celebrates traditional dancing! The biggest meeting of traditional dancing groups takes place every July in Aridea. Lots of foreign countries honor this festival by sending their own traditional groups.
Tsipouro Festival: Another Macedonian traditional feast takes place in November. In the village of Mesimeri, the production of tsipouro is honored with lots of dancing, singing and drinking.
“Kerasiotika”: No, it is not another festival about cherries. This time, we are visiting the village of Kerasi to enjoy a feast with lots of dancing, singing and food. Every year, on the 11th and 12th of August a feast takes place in the village’s square and the locals have fun in their own unique way. Another tsipouro festival takes place in December in the village of Piperia accompanied of a similar feast.
In the villages of the prefecture you will find lots of traditional festivals such as Tzamalaria. In Aridea, on the 6th of January, some men and women dress up like groom and bride and walk through the village and perform some plays in the square. Furthermore, in Edessa, Mesimeri and Xanthogia large fires are lit on Christmas Eve and feasts take place around them.
