Psara is an amphitheatric settlement with hills on the background and crystal seas around it that preserves its tradition, while it also makes progress in the tourist development. As a tribute of honor Psara was proclaimed in 1984 by the Greek Parliament autonomous municipality. Its port is 48 nautical miles away from the port of Chios (around 4 hours) and 85 miles away from port of Lavrio.
Psara has an Aegean aesthetic. The cubic, white houses with ceramic roofs and a few flowers not only provide an island picture, but they also indicate the obvious social cohesion of the island. Island facilities (schools, sport and tourist facilities, banks, public services, taverns, etc.) can service the 422 residents and the visitors. Residents are friendly and simple and their main activities are apiculture, hunting and shipping, while they also use to narrate stories of their ancestors. Visit the residence of the historical captain of Psara Kanaris and the central square. The Holocaust memorial will travel you to the old times, while the carved names of the heroes cause shiver and awe.
Climb up to Mavri Rachi and enjoy the unique panoramic view from the churches of St. John and St. Anna. At the south part, the port with the small boats dancing on the waves pace is one of the most atmospheric pictures of the island.
The presence of only a few cars guarantees casual walks away from urban habits. Everything is accessible within a few kilometers: you can access the most beautiful beach of the island, Lazaretta, on foot too, since it’s only 1 km away from the city. Other beaches, like Lakka and Limnos are further, 3 and 4 km away respectively.
