The church of Panagia Episkopi (Diocese of the Virgin), is one of the most important churches of Santorini, and was for many years claimed by both Orthodox and Catholics. It was constructed in the 11th century by Alexios Komnenos, and in the interior the remains of the earlier temple are still visible, as well as sculptures that are now housed in the Middle Byzantine church. Inside you may admire the wonderful pictures, many of which were unfortunately stolen in 1982, and the paintings and carved marble iconostasis. In the temple, the icon of Panagia Glikofilousa still remains, which was an icon of litany on the walls of Constantinople and was brought here in the 11th century. The current state of the church, however, is different from the one of the 11th century, as several parts and the bell tower have been added since then. This important Byzantine monument is located in Mesa Gonia on the road to Kamari.
