Serifos, an island of the west Cyclades, has gained loyal visitors from all over Greece and beyond. It combines special features, for travelers who are looking for clean beaches, picturesque Cycladic small villages, food with authentic taste, smiling people, good services, and a tranquil atmosphere, just a few hours from Athens. In its many coves beaches with the characteristic blue waters of the Cyclades unfold, trees that generously offer their shadow, while there are a lot of options for ouzo by the sea. Serifos possibly attracts so many loyal visitors, due to its intense magnetic field from its soil, which is rich in mineral rocks. The history of the island, which is inextricably linked with mineral activity, was distinguished both for its minerals, such as the rare lievritis, the green quartz of extreme beauty, and its iron ores and magnetite. Nowadays Serifos is a large outdoor mine museum. Mining activities are past, but the signs are visible. Loading stairs, wagons, railways, tools, and tunnels. Findings on the island have proven that is was inhabited since the ancient years, colonized by the Boeotians. Its kings were Dikti and Polydektes. This civilization experienced a particular flourish, having already since the 6th century b.C. its own currency. It had contact with the Minoans, the Mycenaeans, and the Ionians, while during the period of the campaign of Alexander the Great, the swords that were used had been made in its foundries. The frequent pirate attacks that also occurred to the rest of the islands led the inhabitants to the creation of a fortified settlement in Chora. The mining stopped in 1963, changing completely life on the island, with the thousands of miners abandoning it. Nowadays Serifos receives an increasing number of visitors, who wish to enjoy the beauties of the island, in a place that does not sacrifice tradition and nature in the name of development.
